As the Province of Limburg, we believe it is important that you can read, watch, listen or experience our information through various information channels at any place, at any time. We are also working on interactive features and custom made services. To this end, on our websites, in our newsletters or in our other online services, we may use cookies or other technologies such as scripts, logs, i-frames, plugins, captchas, trackers, pixels and fingerprints, to which we will refer hereafter as “cookies”.
In this cookie statement, we aim to inform you about which cookies we use, for what purposes, what happens to the data collected and how you can manage their use. This allows us to tailor our services to your privacy preferences. The cookie statement applies to the website and online services of the Province of Limburg. We also clearly indicate when we pass on cookies to third parties and under what conditions. Please note: if you click on a link that leads you to an external website, different privacy and cookie policy apply.
What are cookies, scripts, logs, i-frames, plugins, captchas, trackers, pixels and fingerprinting?
Cookies are small data or text files that are installed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website or use an online service. They allow us to recognise your web browser or device and track data about your browsing behaviour. That way, we remember how the website can be displayed properly on your device, for example, or what you filled in on a form, which pages you visited, whether you read our newsletter and what your social media profiles are. We use them to protect our forms from cyber attacks and also to collect all kinds of statistics about the use and users of our website(s) and online services. Some cookies are our own, others are from third parties. Cookies usually also have an expiry date.
The following technologies are also covered by this cookie statement:
Scripts: a series of commands that perform a task on the website, e.g. to save and edit data from a form on our server; your web browser may block certain scripts.
Logs: files that track user information such as your IP address, browser type, internet service provider, the website that referred you to this website, date, time and number of mouse clicks. These logs are used to manage and optimise the website.
I-frames: a field we use to display external content on the website, e.g. videos from Vimeo and YouTube
Captchas: response tests that check whether a human or a computer program is visiting your website. This is to prevent computer programs from abusing the forms on the website.
Trackers: technology that tracks your online behaviour between websites, such as which websites you visit, what actions you take and what information you have entered on these websites, for example your bank card usage, your search terms or the content of your social media profiles, which can then be used to infer personality traits. Examples of trackers include certain cookies, pixels and fingerprinting.
Pixels: small invisible images that allow us to collect certain information about website usage, such as the number of users visiting a particular page.
Digital fingerprint: technique that combines various data about your device to recognise you as a unique user. The digital fingerprint is used to prevent fraud and abuse of the website, as well as to create a profile of you.
